The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the Combined Defence Services (CDS) Examination to recruit candidates for various academies:

  1. Indian Military Academy (IMA)
  2. Indian Naval Academy (INA)
  3. Air Force Academy (AFA)
  4. Officers’ Training Academy (OTA)

The examination syllabus consists of three papers:

PAPER 1: ENGLISH

Designed to assess the candidate’s understanding of English and the ability to use words effectively.

PAPER 2: GENERAL KNOWLEDGE

  • Current Events
  • General Observations
  • Everyday experiences viewed from a scientific perspective.
  • History of IndiaGeography

Candidates should answer based on general knowledge, without needing specialized study in any scientific field.

PAPER 3: ELEMENTARY MATHEMATICS

ARITHMETIC

Number System:

  • Natural numbers, integers, rational and real numbers.
  • Fundamental operations: Addition, subtraction, multiplication, division.
  • Square roots, decimal fractions.
  • Topics:
  • Unitary method, time and distance, time and work.
  • Percentages, profit and loss, simple and compound interest.
  • Ratio and proportion, variation

Elementary Number Theory:

  • Division algorithm, prime and composite numbers.
  • Tests of divisibility (by 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, 11).
  • Multiples and factors, factorization theorem, HCF, LCM.
  • Euclidean algorithm.
  • Logarithms: Laws, base-10, logarithmic tables.

ALGEBRA

  • Basic operations, simple factors, Remainder theorem.
  • HCF, LCM, polynomial theory.
  • Quadratic equations: Solutions, relations between roots and coefficients (real roots only).
  • Simultaneous linear equations: Analytical and graphical solutions
  • .Linear in equations (two variables) and practical problem-solving.
  • Set language, set notation, rational expressions, conditional identities, laws of indices.

TRIGONOMETRY

  • Sine (x), Cosine (x), Tangent (x) for angles 0° < x < 90°.
  • Trigonometric values for 0°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 90°.
  • Basic identities, trigonometric tables.
  • Simple height and distance problems.

GEOMETRY

  • Lines and angles, plane figures.Theorems:
  • Properties of angles at a point.
  • Parallel lines.
  • Triangles (sides, angles, congruency, similarity).
  • Medians, altitudes (concurrence).
  • Parallelogram, rectangle, square properties.
  • Circle properties, tangents, normals, loci.

MENSURATION

  • Areas: Squares, rectangles, triangles, circles, parallelograms.
  • Compound figures (field book)
  • Surface areas and volumes:
  • Cuboids.
  • Right circular cones and cylinders.
  • Spheres.

STATISTICS

  • Data collection, tabulation, graphical representation.
  • Frequency polygons, histograms, bar charts, pie charts.
  • Measures of central tendency.
