The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the Combined Defence Services (CDS) Examination to recruit candidates for various academies:
- Indian Military Academy (IMA)
- Indian Naval Academy (INA)
- Air Force Academy (AFA)
- Officers’ Training Academy (OTA)
The examination syllabus consists of three papers:
PAPER 1: ENGLISH
Designed to assess the candidate’s understanding of English and the ability to use words effectively.
PAPER 2: GENERAL KNOWLEDGE
- Current Events
- General Observations
- Everyday experiences viewed from a scientific perspective.
- History of IndiaGeography
Candidates should answer based on general knowledge, without needing specialized study in any scientific field.
PAPER 3: ELEMENTARY MATHEMATICS
ARITHMETIC
Number System:
- Natural numbers, integers, rational and real numbers.
- Fundamental operations: Addition, subtraction, multiplication, division.
- Square roots, decimal fractions.
- Topics:
- Unitary method, time and distance, time and work.
- Percentages, profit and loss, simple and compound interest.
- Ratio and proportion, variation
Elementary Number Theory:
- Division algorithm, prime and composite numbers.
- Tests of divisibility (by 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, 11).
- Multiples and factors, factorization theorem, HCF, LCM.
- Euclidean algorithm.
- Logarithms: Laws, base-10, logarithmic tables.
ALGEBRA
- Basic operations, simple factors, Remainder theorem.
- HCF, LCM, polynomial theory.
- Quadratic equations: Solutions, relations between roots and coefficients (real roots only).
- Simultaneous linear equations: Analytical and graphical solutions

TRIGONOMETRY

GEOMETRY

MENSURATION

STATISTICS
- Data collection, tabulation, graphical representation.
- Frequency polygons, histograms, bar charts, pie charts.
- Measures of central tendency.
